Far Away

Everytime ‘Far Away’ by Nickelback comes on my iPod I have to let it play. My Marine hasn’t begun his deployment yet, but there are just a handful of days left. He’s checking his gear for the 27th time, all the lose ends have been tied, and my heart is already anticipating the stinging pain of loneliness.

More than anything I focus on enjoying every moment with him, and on memorizing as much about him as I can. I want to remember his face, his voice, his laugh, his touch, the way my stomach flutters as if filled with a dozen butterflies as I watch him walk from his car to my front door. I am terrified that I will forget these things while he’s gone, or even worse, that I may never get the opportunity to experience them again.

Unfortunately, this is part of what you sign up for when you become a military girlfriend/wife. We love men who face unspeakable danger. But, I couldn’t imagine doing anything other than waiting for him… faithfully.

“…With you, I’d withstand all of hell to hold your hand. I’d give it all, I’d give for us, give anything but I won’t give up cause you know that I love you. I have loved you all along. And I miss you, been far away for far too long. I keep dreaming you’ll be with me and you’ll never go. Stop breathing if I don’t see you anymore…. Hold on to me and never let me go…”

This is pretty much exactly how it looks when he’s leaving the house - except even though he’s white I’m not, ha ha.
